Frey

Frey is one of the most important gods of the Norse pantheon.  He was a fertility god of the Vanir race of Gods and was mostly associated with the sun, rain and a bountiful harvest.  The name Frey itself means “Lord”.

In the Icelandic books, “The Poetic Edda” and the “The Prose Edda”, Frey is introduced as the son of the sea god Njord and the goddess Nertha or Gaea (Mother Earth) and is brother of the Goddess Freya.  He was given the light Elves of Alfheim to govern over as Lord as a gift from the Aesir when he was a child as a gift when his first tooth began to grow in.  He also has servants named Skirnir, Byggvir and Beyla.
Frey is known to ride a chariot pulled by the golden boar Gullinbursti which was made for him by the dwarves Brokk and Eitri. He owns the ship Skidbladnir which always has a favourable breeze and sails directly on target.  Skidbladnir can also be folded to become so small that it can fit right in Frey’s pocket.

Frey also possesses a sword that would by itself emerge from its sheath and fight on its own “if wise be he who wields it”.  Frey sat on Odins throne one day and gazed over all the word, and when he looked into the northern lands, he saw a great house.  Towards this house went a woman who seems to gleam and the world was illuminated by her.  Frey fell in love with this woman, who was the beautiful Giantess Gerd.  He became depressed and asked his servant, Skirnir, to go and win her over for him.  Skirnir consents but only on the condition that he is given Skidbladnir in exchange.  Gerd is won over after being threatened by Skirnir, and eventually marries Frey.

As a consequence of losing the sword, during Ragnarok, (The End Days of the Gods), Frey will have to battle without weapons because of giving his sword away and will be the first to be killed by the fire giant Surt.
